Step 1: Creating a New Phonebook Entry


Go into My Computer and double-click on Dial-Up Networking. When the Dial-Up Networking window is open, click on the "New" button. This will open the New Phonebook Entry Wizard.

If this is your first time making a new connection, the New Phonebook Entry Wizard will open up.

In the New Phonebook Entry Wizard, the name of the new phonebook entry is Humboldt Internet. Then click Next.

On the server screen, make sure the box at the top is checked that says, "I am calling the Internet" box. Then click Next.

Check your phone book to see that the following phone numbers are local to you. For the phone number, please use 825-4600 (Arcata), 725-0626 (Fortuna), and 444-3033 (Eureka).

If you have a modem that handles 56kbp use these numbers:
Click on Next

That's it. Click on Finish

Step 2: Edit Entry and Modem Properties

On the Dial-Up Networking screen, click on the More button and select Edit Entry and Modem Properites.
Click the Server tab at the top of the screen. For the Dial-up server type, make sure PPP: Windows 95 Plus, Internet is selected. For Network protocols, make sure TCP/IP is checked.

Make sure the boxes are checked at the bottom which say Enable software compression and Enable PPP LCP extension.

Click TCP/IP settings.
Click Server assigned IP address.
Click Specify name server address and enter in the following addresses:
  • Primary DNS: 206.13.45.1
  • Secondary DNS: 206.13.28.11
Make sure the boxes are checked at the bottom which say to Use header compression and Use default gateway on remote network.

Click OK.
Click on the Script tab and in the After dialing (login) frame, select the None option.

Click OK and close out of the Dial-Up Networking screen.

Step 3: Configure TCP/IP Protocol

Go into My Computer, and go into Control Panel.

Double-click the Network control panel.

Click on the Protocols tab and select TCP/IP Protocols, so it is highlighted, in the Network Protocols box. Click the Properties button on the middle of the screen.
Click on the DNS tab at the top of the window.

In the Host, enter your computer name (this can be anything). In the Domain box, enter humboldt1.com

In the DNS Service Search Order box, click on the Add button. On the TCP/IP DNS Server screen, type in 206.13.45.1, then click Add. Repeat the process and enter the following DNS numbers, 206.13.28.11 and 206.13.45.66.

Click OK.

On the Protocol screen, click OK. You'll be back at the Network control panel. Click on OK.
Restart your computer.

To create a shortcut for your dialer:

Now, let's create a shortcut to the Humboldt Internet connection so you can access it easily from the desktop. Go into My Computer and double-click on Dial-Up Networking. In Dial-Up Networking, click the More button and select Create shortcut to entry. A Windows dialog box will appear asking you where you want to place your shortcut. Click Ok. You'll now have a Humboldt Internet icon on your Desktop.

Now you're ready to connect!


To connect to Humboldt Internet:

Double-click on the Humboldt Internet icon on the Desktop. This will bring up a box asking for your login name and your password (remember that they should always be in lowercase). Your login name and your password are on your signup sheet. Remember that your login name does not have @humboldt1.com in it!

If the box marked Save Password is lit, check it so you won't have to type in your password everytime you connect.

Click on the Connect button to connect.

Once you're connected to Humboldt Internet


After you're connected to us, start up the Internet program you want to use. There are tutorials in your setup packet and on our website that cover downloading and installing Eudora and Netscape.


Don't forget to disconnect from us when you're done.

To disconnect:

Double-click on the Humboldt Internet icon. This will bring up a small window with a OK button and a Disconnect button. Click on the Disconnect button to hang up your modem and disconnect from us. Click on the OK button to stay online.
